Semester 7th

Ujjayant B was part of the Studio Faculty at RVCA Bengaluru for the Seventh Semester AD Studio based on the design of an urban nucleus building in Bangalore as an exercise in place-making in the public realm with emphasis on understanding architecture as a product of many systems in a place. The studio explores the idea of ‘meta’ as architectural design beyond its physical manifestation, it understands architecture as a product of many systems of a place. Architecture in this narrative does not function as an isolated object but takes into account the existing user group, their activities and their associations with the place and attempts to appropriately respond and plug into them. The studio aims to sensitize design processes to the functioning of these systems of a place and intends to help the students recognize multiple directions for perceiving a place. It further directs the students to analyze the systems identified through an architectural lens, understand the negotiations between the systems and their respective stakeholders of the place, and derive cues for the program and design for the place. The students were given a study area in Banashankari where they understood the functioning of the place concerning the activities, user groups, and collective associations of people with the place. The students worked in groups to choose a lens through which they would study the place such as activities relating to transit, retail, temple precinct, and residential neighborhood. Their observations and analysis were extrapolated to collectively define the identity of Banashankari.
