Ashramsthan, a spiritual center, attempts to encapsulate the values of spiritual freedom and retreat. A pro-bono collaboration project situated in close vicinity to Durgabari, in Nagaon, Assam, the project attempts to convey the in-between purposes of the built and unbuilt and how actors in the precinct interact with its different elemental spaces. After discussing the initial requirements and needs of the clients that focused on spiritual escapism, the further assessment of the culture of the place, context and users, led our practice to be informed of the lack of a permanent performance space in the context for local functions and a nearby pre-primary girl school. Hence, as a spatial program, that could marry the elements of spiritual liberation and freedom of expression that is imperative of the place and its people, became our core of design development. Staying true not only to the values of the organization in spirit and physicalities but also to the intangibles of the context, the design utilizes pure forms, simple geometry and porous tectonics that benefit from the serene and intricate imagery of the contextual elements and generate a safe space or oasis for its users. The notions of meditation, contemplation and performance are central in definition of the spatial programming of the project. The project was hence finally envisioned as a spiritual center for the local community that would also act as a safe-haven positioned at an intersection of expression, opinion and culture. The local girl’s school was involved in generating prompts for the spatial operations and functions along with the clients. They also played a significant role in devising the imagery & geometry of form & space. Core concepts of freedom, liberation, spiritualism were translated into three elemental built and semi built spaces within the site. Programatically the central assembly hall acts as a performance space and a classroom for spiritual wellness. The Tower is a sanctum that allows self reflection and contemplation and is also dedicated to the organization’s spiritual guru. The phenomenological quality of the tower is enhanced with the use of a surreal scale and intricate openings that let in a certain quality of light. A set of steps on the compound wall across the western edge adds to the performative aspect of the site. All the drawings that were generated for the project were handed over to the school and the organization, printed in local fabric.
